The food truck trend is about bringing great food to the streets and the shared experiences around that food. I’m not talking about grabbing a boerie roll or a burger on the sidewalk but fresh and delicious food that will tide you over perfectly well until your next fine-dining splurge. Here are two food trucks you need to track down.

Tutto Food Truck

Husband and wife team Daniel and Clementine Forsthofer serves an Afro-Mediterranean menu packed with flavour from their bright yellow 1976 VW Kombi in Jozi. The seafood paella won’t disappoint, I promise. Also look out for their Jozambique pop-up lunches from April when they’ll be serving three-course meals inspired by the food and drink of Mozambique. You’ll find the Tutto Food Truck in Rosebank, Sandton and central Jozi at lunchtime. Follow @tuttofoodco on Twitter for updates.

The Chefs’ Bench

The Chefs’ Bench is an epicurean food truck producing consciously crafted low- and slow-barbecued food. Chefs Matt Finch and Steffen Olivier are on the move in 2014, serving barbecued food and their special take on salads and sides from the back of a rather cool truck. Visit or follow them on Twitter @chefsbench to see where they’ll be next.

Head’s up: Cape Town will have its first Street Food Festival this year. According to Hannerie Visser who is putting it all together there will be a one-day conference with local and international speakers and workshops for aspiring street-food entrepreneurs followed by an open day with several of the city’s trucks in one spot. Watch this space for details… we can’t wait to t(r)uck in!
