A great hairstyle always makes you look twice. We snapped some beautiful looks – from the quirky to the classic and a few in between. Sometimes the ultimate accessory is the mop you rock.
THE PIXIE CROP
Editor, ELLE Magazine SA
Hairstylist: Dawid Kriel from Institute Aesthetic in Somerset West (021 851 4789)
Hair inspiration: I have always loved the very iconic styles; the bob, chignon and pixie. The pixie has always been a favourite, though. I remember being inspired by the likes of Audrey Hepburn, Mia Farrow and Twiggy but most of all by Jean Seberg. I love its minimalism; it always feels very modern and confident.
Junior fashion editor, Glamour
Hairstylist: Mary Gouveia at In Hair Studio (021 558 4607 )
Hair inspiration: I guess it’s a mix between Mrs Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction) and the actress Rooney Mara.
THE BOWL CUT
Hairstylist: Andrew Guilfoyle at Scar Hair (021 422 5900)
Hair inspiration: Coco Chanel minimalism and 1970s rock ‘n’ roll
Scar brand ambassador and hairstylist
Hair stylist: Andrew Guilfoyle from Scar Hair (021 422 5900)
Hair inspiration: David Bowie and Vivienne Westwood. I am inspired by people who like to let someone like me cut their hair. I love innovators, not followers.
THE BRAIDED BUN
Junior fashion editor, Marie Claire
Hairstylist: Precious at Love Hair Salon (021 461 4375)
Hair inspiration: Everyone who knows me knows that my hair changes all the time! Sometimes I try something different every day. My hair is a reflection of my mood.
UNDONE (when undone is the done thing for 2013)
Art gallery curator’s assistant/freelance artist
Hairstylist: I started cutting my own hair at 16 and have done so ever since! I buy all my hair products from Jabula Hair (021 4217299)
Hair inspiration: Lisa Bonet in the 1980s, Macy Gray and Solange Knowles. I also love Emeli Sande’s cut although I don’t have the guts to go all blonde just yet!
SHORT BACK AND SIDES
Hairstylist: Mike at the African Women’s’ Market and yes, this cut cost me R25! (021 422 3587)
Hair inspiration: I just wanted a new look for a fresh start.
