I am a fan of M.A.C. and since I met senior M.A.C. artist Michelle-Lee Collins last week, I am a big fan of her too! She’s been with M.A.C. for nine years and has transformed many a model at local and International fashion weeks and most recently worked on the Vivienne Westwood show in Paris. Naturally she was the person to ask about the biggest trends for A/W 2013. Using my face as a canvas, she let me in on the latest make-up looks.

Sense and sensibility

The trend: It’s barely there, minimalist make-up with the focus on Nordic nudes. Skin is flushed, refreshed and revitalised and the secret for pulling off the look is stained lips.

The look: Understated, innocent dewy skin and a flawless finish

You will need:

1. Fix + – Michelle swears by this hydrating mist. It’s great for calming the skin and essential for making make-up last.
2. Strobe Cream – It’s an essential hydrating cream that illuminates and moisturizes, and a M.A.C. cult product.
3. Prep and Prime Vibrancy eye cream
4. Pro Conceal and Correct Palette – Michelle says that this product is a staple At fashion weeks and is many a make-up artist’s go-to item.
5. Cream Colour Base in Pearl
6. Mineralize Moisture Foundation with SPF 15
7. Prep and Prime lip
8. Studio Careblend Powder
9. Brow comb
10. Lash curler
11. Harmony blush
12. Cherry lip pencil
13. Brush #130 (for buffed foundation)

This look is impossible to achieve without a perfectly clean skin.

1. Start out with a healthy spritz of M.A.C. Fix + Hydration Mist

2. Apply a thin layer of M.A.C. Strobe Cream to rejuvenate and moisturise skin.

3. Never neglect your eyes. Prep and Prime Vibrancy Eye fights all eye concerns such as puffiness, dark circles and broken veins and primes the eye area for make-up. Use your ring finger to pat it on.

4. Prime your lips with a waxy lip balm before applying lipstick. Be sure to go over the edges to seal all fine lines so that your lipstick won’t bleed into them.

5. Using Cherry Lip Liner, colour the centre of your mouth. Purse your lips to blend the colour and then pat the colour to spread it to the edges of your lips. The most intense colour should be in the middle of your mouth.

6. Pat a little Pearl Cream Colour Base onto your cheekbones and the centre of your eyelids to reflect light naturally.

7. Curl your lashes with a lash curler to ‘open’ your eyes and define your lashes naturally.

Top tip: Brush your brows with a brush comb to open your face and give you a refreshed look. It sounds simple but it’s very effective!

Hone structure

The trend: This look is all about the face’s architecture of the face and transforming your look by contouring and highlighting. Most women don’t know it but once you have mastered these techniques, you can transform your face with a monochromatic palette.

The look: Defined and sharp. It’s how to wear this season’s bold brows, so say bye-bye to arched brows and hello to flat, fuller and fluffier brows

You will need:

1. Pro conceal and correct palette – an absolute must!
2. Mineralize Moisture SPF 15 Foundation
3. Luxe Natural Mineralize Rich Lipstick – It’s a lip balm and lipstick in one and a great buy for winter.
4. Mineralize Skin Finish Natural Powder
5. 168 Brush – essential for contouring
6. Coloured Brow Set with tint – show off
7. Duck PowerPoint eye pencil
8. M.A.C. Brow Pencil – Spiked

Step by step:

The brow beat
Top tip: Always brush your brows up before plotting or filling them.

1. Start with a light application of foundation.

2. Feel for the small groove under your cheekbone close to your ear. This is your contour line.

1. Using a M.A.C. 168 Brush and dust on a small amount of Mineralize Skin Finish Naturals as close to your ears as possible in those contour lines.

2. Use the outer corner of your eye as a guide for where stop. It should be roughly 5cm from your ear.

3. Dust off your brush and buff the edges of the lines to soften them.

4. Use the same brush and lightly brush Mineralize Natural Powder along the edges of your hairline. Brush the same powder, but a heavier dusting, onto your temples to create a slimming effect.

5. Brush a little of the powder underneath your jaw line to define it.

6. Imagine that the contour around your hairline is framing your face. Use your ring finger and tap a little Pear Cream Colour Base onto the top of your cheekbones, bridge of your nose and between the eyes, on the brow bone and on your Cupid’s bow.

Top tip: Always start contouring as close to your ears as possible and work from your ear to the corner of your lip, in a straight line.

If you have a special occasion coming up or simply want to treat yourself, do book a session with M.A.C. (R380 for one look, 30 minutes) or R500 for a more in-depth lesson. If it’s Michelle’s expertise you are after, ask for her at R700 per lesson.

And here is the exciting part – we’re giving away a M.A.C. experience with one of their artists to one lucky reader. To enter, tell us which trend you would love to rock and why by commenting below.

This competition is now closed! Congratulations to our winner: Jenny! We’ll be in touch shortly and enjoy your M.A.C experience.

The understated appearance of the ‘Sense and Sensibility’ look is suited to my personality and it is a look that I try to achieve, but with my limited skill does not come close to this at all. I know I would rock this natural look so please pick me for the M.A.C experience.

The sense sensibility look, I would really love to rock a look that would make my face features pop. I’ve got big eyes, plump cheeks and full lips so the bright red would look perfect. What would be even better would be me rocking the look at the glam launch on Youth day that I have to attend.
Crossing fingers that I win :)

I would love to rock the M.A.C experience, Sense and sensibility, as this is something different, totally outside of my comfort zone. I wouldn’t do something like this without it being done professionally. I’d love to be transformed into a Fearless Femme, work of art*

    Sense and sensibility please.

Getting this natural look is not naturally easy.
I want to learn to master this because this is an everyday look.
I want the dewy finish on my skin and I also want to know my mac shade.

I love hw the model glows and I have been striving for that look for so long.

I would like to try Sense and Sensibility. The lip colour is much bolder than what I wear, but I am interested to see how it would look on me.

  • Roxanne Chutthergoon June 5, 2013 - 7:43 pm Reply

I would love to try out the Honed Structure

I have a long-ish face, and I never know how to highlight it well without ending up looking like I’m trying too much.

I love the idea of contouring and highlighting facial features in simplicity. It’s all about enhancing your facial features to bring about a transformation.

I also have pretty bushy brows, and I love the play on fuller, bold brows – I could totally rock that look!

This is an amazing price, really hoping to win!

I am following you on Twitter too @Roxi_23 :)

Every MUA says that just by contouring and highlighting the face correctly it can make your best feature stand out, i want to win this experience so i can master how to showcase my best features.
Love that look has flat fuller brows , which i have!! always hated the shape but now i realised its best feature :)
I’m a novice when it comes to makeup , i really want to win this so i can learn the pro way of application! please please pick me for this brilliant opportunity.

Definitely Sense and sensibility! I struggle with lip colour (so I NEVER wear it) and it would be great to learn how to incorporate it into an every day look. Also – flawless skin. Who doesn’t need to know how to do this perfectly?

I got married 6 weeks ago, which was obviously a huge life change. I chopped off 15cm of hair, new hair style – so a new makeup look would complete the change!

I absolutely adore the sense and sensibility look! Pairing the Nordic Nudes with those stained lips works so well and looks gorgeous! I’d love to learn how to make lipstick last throughout the entire day so you dont have to keep reapplying?

I would absolutely love to try the sense and sensibility look. I always shy away from a stained lip in favour of nude as I am not sure how to “work it” for my skin tone/

  • Roxanne June 6, 2013 - 12:01 pm Reply

I love the minimalistic look! As someone who prefers natural (and very little) make-up, I love that this look is a trend right now. Interesting article :)

I absolutely love the “Sense & Sensibility” because it’s so versatile! I do a lot of running around in my job and time is not always on my side but with this look, I can go from Work to a girl’s night out effortlessly. Stained lips are so hot and I’m actually rocking a MAC Mineralize Ricj lipstick in “Lush Life”!! Love MAC!! I’d love to learn how to make the intensity of eyeshadow last on my eyes as I’m an ethnic young lady:)
