Being a Durbanite, I am always excited when I come home to find a new shop or creative space that has popped up. I haven’t been in the Durban loop for quite some time, so forgive me for only stumbling onto Shoppe now. For those who, like me, haven’t been there, here’s the low-down. It’s a space that showcases local creatives’ work and is owned and curated by Sonia Vosloo. You’ll find Shoppe directly across the pebbled courtyard from Market (a great spot for breakfast or lunch, but that’s a whole different story). It has amazing ceramics, artwork, basically whatever your heart desires to make your living and work space a keeper. Everything is locally designed and produced, whether it’s craft pieces or designs by trending up-and-coming designers. Local is their game.
I look for wit, originality and that something special that makes it quintessentially South African in each product,’ says Sonia.
On Sonia’s radar:
In décor and homeware, this season copper is huge. Upcycled and repurposed pieces excite me, and the beautifully done origami by Simple Intrigue’s Keri Muller.
Durban has a crop of hot new talent that I believe will shake things up. Look out for leather goods from Max Pienaar’s Saviour Brand, Mr Fox furniture and lighting and paper flowers from Freshly Found.
Shoppe stocks some pretty cool new ranges from Ceramic Factory, Alex Hamilton, Cradle of Mankind and Sobeit Studios, so go check them out at:
40 Marriot Rd (now Gladys Mazibuko Road)
