To be perfectly honest, I am not a Long Street regular. When I heard that chef Seelan Sundoo (ex Grand Café Camps Bay and La Perla and formerly consultant to Shimmy Beach Club) has his finger in a new pie, even though this pie is on Long Street, I was definitely keen to have a taste.
Mexican on Long Tequila and Food Bar serves exactly what the name suggests, really great Mexican classics and plenty of tequila (over 27 different kinds, to be exact). Owner Peter van den Berg and Seelan opened the doors in December last year and the food, interior and heartbeat of the restaurant combine to create a very cool vibe. The downstairs area is occupied by a bar and lounge set against colourful hand-painted murals and beautifully reclaimed and restored wood. The bar stools are made from old wheel bases and the attention to detail in the space makes Mexican On Long a spot that is colourful, trendy and perfect for a festive night out with friends.
Did I mention how obsessed I am with these lights? Cluster lighting is very in – love!
Upstairs is where the action is so grab a margarita, a sombrero and sit on the balcony with a view of Long Street and Table Mountain. Mexican on Long is super chilled. I love that the menu doubles as a placemat and that the friendly staff makes you feel right at home.
Here’s what you need to know:
When to go? Mexican on Long is open Monday – Saturday from 10am – 1am and Sundays from 10am – 5pm. I say go in the evening when the buzz is just right and crowd great.
What to try? Chilli poppers and nachos, obviously. I’ve heard that the pork, duck or chicken burritos and tacos are great too. If you love ceviche, let me tell you, they make it beautifully.
What else is there to love? It’s affordable and fun. Put on one of their sombreros and let your hair down.
