It’s a bar, shop, office, exhibition space and restaurant. In short, It’s a House is an integrated space that allows for collaboration and creativity. The idea behind it is, as their slogan suggests, to ‘Create. Share. Connect.’
My ever sceptical boyfriend didn’t buy it but I dragged him along nonetheless. We arrived at It’s a House but no-one was home, for 30 minutes, that is. Eventually the chef and staff casually sauntered to the front door and although there weren’t any apologies, we were welcomed as if we are members of their slightly offbeat family. Enter their world, and the wait was worth it. Just like a house, it’s the heartbeat that makes it a home.
It’s the brainchild of Scott Paterson Morris and business partner David Dix who have invested in young creatives and set up It’s a House as a platform where likeminded people can rent a desk (on a month-to-month basis, which includes free internet and a meal) or park off on one of the couches with a laptop to meet and chat over coffee, simple food and live music to get those creative juices going.
There are many rooms off the main ‘living room’. There’s a music studio, DJ booth, meeting room, retail space showcasing local design, a smoking room that resembles a garden shed and office space marked off by white picket fencing. The mood is very cool, very laidback. The décor is not as understated. The bar is highlighted by a circular piece of wood art that frames the area. The rustic, eclectic interior has a homely feel and so does the mix of old and new furniture. It’s a space for hanging out and spending the day. We ate breakfast on a couch, sussed out the fashion that’s for sale and paged through a few of the amazing books scattered across almost every surface. There is a lot to take in, from flashing lights to mannequins and the odd pram in one corner and ironing board in another.
The concept is cool, the food good and I’m told nights are when it’s happening too. It is, after all, a creative playground. Pop in for their themed nights and like them on Facebook to stay in the loop with sessions by up and coming musicians. I will definitely be back and to my surprise, so will the initially pessimistic boyfriend.
It’s A House is open Monday to Saturday 8am – 23:30pm.
