Generally it takes a lot to get me excited. When I spotted the work of Portuguese illustrator António Soares – there was definite excitement going on here. I spent a few days obsessing over the talented António’s fashion illustrations. His hand-drawn watercolour illustrations series are based on the trends, colours and patterns of the season. I needed to know more. I got in touch with the man himself to ask a few questions. Here is the good stuff!

Antonio, I first saw your illustrations at the beginning of this year and I was immediately in awe of your work, so thank you for this opportunity!
How did you get into fashion illustrating?
‘It was never my intention to be a fashion illustrator. I took a degree in painting but always liked drawing. Illustration has always been the area to which I have devoted for pure pleasure so it is something that just happened naturally. I collaborated with a Portuguese designer Nuno Baltazar and from that moment I started to develop my personal project to illustrate Portuguese fashion designers. I believe that fashion illustration is a perfect medium for telling stories, and I build my narrative, based on the amazing work of fashion designers and is an area that I have been developing these last few years because, and above all, I like fashion!’
We love your hand drawn watercolour illustrations series based on fashion of the season. Where was the idea born?
This last project of illustration , S/S 2013, is my first attempt to illustrate international fashion designers. I was immediately in love with the graphics that the designers presented, the wonderful play of colors and contrasts. That game of shades and forms are prefect to illustrate and I wanted to capture their beauty. Kenzo, Balmain, Celine, Dolce Gabbana, Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton and Alexandra Moura, these are the collections that most resonated with me for my S/S 2013 project.’
What are you currently working on?
‘I have started to illustrate Winter/Fall 2013/ 2014 Portuguese Designers shown at ModaLisboa (Lisboa Fashion Week) and Portugal Fashion Week.’
Who or what do you draw inspiration from?
Music, travelling, cinema, Tilda Swinton, my mum and love!
Which designers inspire your illustrations specifically?
The Fall/Winter Lanvin collection is amazing and truly inspiring, as well as the Dolce Gabbana, and Comme Des Garçons collections. Portuguese Designer Alexandra Moura’s delicate and stunning work is also a huge inspiration. There are so many others that have such an amazing work – too many to mention.
How would you describe yourself?
Impulsive, passionate, a dreamer and a hardworking guy!
When you’re not illustrating, what do you get up to?
Teaching Classes, cooking or hanging out with my love
